Volunteers and Interns
Thanks to our dedicated volunteers (professional and lay) and graduate student interns, ABC is able to achieve a much larger impact in our community than our small staff might suggest. Helping young children reach their social and emotional potential can be very rewarding -- here’s what one volunteer wrote:
"Some thoughts on what I have received from my volunteer work at ABC. 1st humility and gratitude... I am so grateful for the way I was raised and realize how important it is to be shown [thru observing at ABC] a healthy way of interacting with others.
2nd an opportunity to heal myself...to improve how I look at other human beings as well as anything else in this world.
3rd a look into my past and to see the journey I have traveled and how I got to where I am.
4th an opportunity to grow and see things thru a new set of eyes.
5th the gift of compassion... to see and feel what it is like to be another human being. Those are just for starters. I have never left (the childcare center) without feeling better than when I got there. Thank you for allowing me to be a volunteer."
Graduate students who are working towards a masters degree can intern at ABC and gain clinical experience under the supervision of a licensed therapist/play therapy supervisor. Many interns report that their experiences were eye-opening. One recent intern put it this way:
“I am getting my masters in social work and interned with them for my foundation school year. It was a great experience and it is great to see that agencies like this exist. The staff is excellent and the children really benefit from the program. I have personally experienced the changes in the behaviors of the children that are served by the agency.”
