Learn Play Therapy Techniques to Enable 
You to Work with the Youngest Clients

Mornings: Hands on Clinical Play Therapy and IMH experience in the Childcare Setting

Afternoons: Didactic and experiential workshops

 

All “Bout Children is able to offer extensive training in play therapy and working with children 6 and younger using a “hands on” model for Mental Health Professionals due to a generous grant from the Quantum Foundation.

Therapists will receive 26 hours of didactic instruction and 48 hours of supervised work with children, practicing the skills learned. There will be a one week (30 hours) intensive followed by 12 weeks (one morning per week) of clinical supervision/instruction which is completed by working with a licensed therapist.

Participants will benefit from reflective supervision and modeling by licensed Registered Play Therapists in clinical settings. After each clinical session there will be time to process the session. Each didactic workshop will have 4 or fewer participants, in order to provide as individualized learning as possible.

Participants will receive 26 State of Florida continuing education credits for MHC, MSW, and MFT and Association for Play Therapy credits.  A Level II background check and health clearance is required.

Workshop Objectives:

History and Theoretical Basis for Play Therapy
- understand the historical roots of play therapy
- be able to discriminate between play and play therapy
- recognize why play therapy is effective for young children
- recognize themes in play

Establishing a Therapeutic Relationship
- understand impact of attitude and acceptance on the therapeutic relationship
- know the three attitudinal qualities of a therapeutic relationship
- understand the importance of suspending judgment for the healing process
- able to recognize counter-transference in a clinical setting
- understand the importance of setting structure in a clinical session
- able to implement three structural tools in a clinical setting

Reflective Listening
- understand reflective listening as a means to developing a therapeutic
relationship
- understand reflective listening as a means to help clients process, problem solve, and understand their issues/problems/conflicts
- understand encouragement as a strategy to build self-esteem and foster ability to internalize appropriate  behavior
- demonstrate 4 levels of reflective listening: tracking, feelings, enlarging the meaning, and encouragement

Limit-Setting
- understand ACT model as a cognitive behavioral strategy
- be able to create and apply appropriate three step limit-setting in a clinical setting

Choices
- understand choices as a way of helping children develop inner locus of control (empowerment)
- demonstrate the ability to giving therapeutic choices (incl. the importance of setting limits first)

Brain development
- understand neuro-sequential brain development
- understand risk factors to brain development
- learn interventions that foster brain development

Attachment
- understand the importance of attachment
- identify risk factors to secure attachment
- be able to identify the different categories of attachment
- understand why insecure attachment impacts brain development
- recognize how attachment is manifested in child behaviors

Trauma
- be able to define trauma
- understand the impact of trauma on social-emotional wellness and child development
- understand how trauma impacts brain structures
- recognize how trauma is manifested in child behavior

Diagnosis
- be familiar with the DC:03 R diagnosis
- recognize differential diagnoses for disorders with similar symptoms
be aware when a diagnosis is not applicable

Infant Mental Health
- understand the components of infant mental health
- learn how to engage and work with the youngest clients
- know how to make assessment with the youngest clients (Crowell)
- how to watch, wait and wonder in order to learn from children’s play
- learn to listen for parents’ past as it expressed in the present (known as “ghosts in the nursery” and “angels in  the nursery”)

Assessment in Play Therapy
- learn how to conduct assessments using play therapy
